CSV or JSON? Choosing the right format for your data

Both CSV and JSON store tabular data, but they behave very differently. Learn which one fits your use case, and how to switch between them freely.

CSV and JSON are the two most common plain-text formats for moving data around, and both appear constantly in everyday work. The right choice depends on what the data is for, who will read it and what software is involved.

The short answer

  • CSV is a flat table: rows and columns, no hierarchy. Excel, databases and most business tools speak it natively.
  • JSON is a tree: nested objects and arrays. APIs, web apps and configuration files use it almost exclusively.

If the data is a simple table and will stay that way, CSV is usually the pragmatic choice. If the data has structure, nested records, objects with mixed fields, JSON wins.

When CSV is better

  • Spreadsheets and databases. Importing and exporting is a one-click operation in Excel, Google Sheets, PostgreSQL and countless other tools.
  • Human-readable exports. A CSV opens in a text editor and in every spreadsheet app.
  • Huge flat tables. Parsers handle millions of rows efficiently.

When JSON is better

  • APIs. Nearly every web API returns and accepts JSON.
  • Nested data. Orders with line items, config objects, event payloads, structures CSV cannot express without flattening.
  • Type clarity. JSON distinguishes strings, numbers, booleans and null; CSV stores everything as text.

Switching between them is free

You do not have to choose once. On Azpy you can convert a CSV to JSON in seconds, or the other way around, entirely in your browser. The first row of your CSV becomes the object keys, and every following row becomes one JSON object, and back again, a JSON array of objects becomes a table.

A rule of thumb

Ask one question: is the data a flat table or a structure? Flat tables → CSV. Anything with nesting → JSON. And when in doubt, convert, it takes seconds and nothing is uploaded.
