How to extract text from a PDF (free and without uploading)
PDFs are great for layout and terrible for editing. Here is how to pull clean text or Markdown out of a PDF in your browser, privately.
A PDF is a picture of a document: it looks identical everywhere, but the text inside is hard to reuse. If you have ever copied text from a PDF and got broken lines or garbled characters, you know the pain. Extracting the text properly makes the content usable again, for notes, for a summary, or for turning it into a document you can edit.
Why a PDF is hard to reuse
PDF was designed to preserve layout, not to be edited. The text is split into lines and positioned on the page, so a naive copy can lose order, merge columns or include page numbers. A proper extraction reads the text layer, respects the reading order and outputs clean content.
What you can do with the extracted text
- Notes and summaries. Pull the key paragraphs into a notes app instead of keeping a 40-page PDF open.
- Republishing. Convert the PDF to Markdown and paste it into a wiki, a blog or a CMS.
- Feeding other tools. Language models, translators and summarizers work much better with clean text than with a copy-pasted PDF.
- Accessibility and search. Plain text is searchable, lightweight and readable by any screen reader.
Which output should you choose?
It depends on what you plan to do next:
- PDF to TXT keeps the raw text, ideal when you only need the words.
- PDF to Markdown keeps headings, lists and links as structure, best when the document will live on.
- PDF to HTML produces a styled, standalone document you can open or publish directly.
Do it locally, not in the cloud
On Azpy, PDF text extraction happens in your browser with WebAssembly. The PDF never leaves your device, which matters if the document contains anything sensitive, such as an invoice, a contract or an internal report. Open PDF to Markdown, drop the file, and download the result.
One note: extraction works on text-based PDFs. If your PDF is a scanned document made of images, you need OCR, read the pages with a scanner tool first, then convert.
