How to convert DOC to DOCX

DOCX is the modern Office Open XML format: smaller files, better recovery from damage and full support in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace and Apple iWork. This converter opens the DOC with LibreOffice and saves it as DOCX, preserving text, styles, tables and images as faithfully as possible. It is the quickest way to open an incompatible file or to meet a format requirement without installing an office suite.

  1. Step 1: Choose your DOC file

Drag and drop a .doc file onto the converter or click to browse. It works on desktop, tablet and phone.

  2. Step 2: Convert to DOCX

The file is uploaded securely and saved as DOCX by LibreOffice in a temporary, isolated folder.

  3. Step 3: Download the DOCX

Save the DOCX file to your device. You can start again with another file right away.

About the formats

What is DOC?

DOC is the binary document format used by Microsoft Word up to Word 2003. It stores text, formatting, images and tables in a proprietary structure that Microsoft later documented publicly. Since Word 2007 it has been replaced by DOCX, which is based on XML and ZIP, but Word, LibreOffice and most word processors still open DOC files.

Use DOC only when you must share a document with someone on a very old version of Word or with a system that accepts nothing else. For everything else, DOCX is smaller, more robust and better supported. If you receive a DOC file, saving it as DOCX or PDF usually makes it easier to work with.

What is DOCX?

DOCX (Word Open XML) is the modern editable format for word processor documents, used by Microsoft Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice. Despite the file extension, a DOCX file is a ZIP container holding the document text and structure as XML. It has been the default format for Word documents since 2007.

Use DOCX when you need an editable document that others can open and change, reports, letters, essays and any text that will be revised or worked on together. Its open XML structure also makes it the reliable choice for converting into PDF before sharing.
