HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container)

HEIC is Apple's name for images stored in HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) and compressed with the HEVC (H.265) codec. iPhones and iPads have used it as their default photo format since iOS 11. It typically delivers similar quality to JPG at a noticeably smaller size and can hold extras such as depth maps, Live Photos and image sequences.

HEIC is a good choice for storing photos on Apple devices, where it saves space without visible loss. When you share photos with Windows users, older software or websites that do not accept HEIC, converting them to JPG is the easiest way to avoid compatibility problems.
