MKV (Matroska video)

MKV is the video file of Matroska, an open, royalty-free multimedia container first released in 2002. It can store virtually any video and audio codec, as well as multiple audio tracks, several subtitle streams, chapters and attachments in a single file. Players such as VLC and many smart TVs handle it well, but support in browsers, Apple software and editing tools is limited.

Use MKV to archive films and series with several languages and subtitle tracks, or to store high-quality rips without re-encoding. When you need a video to play on phones, in browsers or in editing software, remuxing or converting it to MP4 is usually the easiest option.
