WebM (Web Media)

WebM is an open, royalty-free media format launched by Google in 2010 and based on the Matroska container. It carries VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Vorbis or Opus audio, all free of licensing fees. Chrome, Firefox, Edge and other modern browsers play it natively, and it supports transparency with VP8 and VP9.

Use WebM for videos embedded on websites, screen recordings and animations with transparent backgrounds. For sharing with people who will open the file on phones, TVs or editing software, MP4 is more widely supported.
