WMV (Windows Media Video)

WMV (Windows Media Video) is a family of video codecs developed by Microsoft, usually stored in the ASF (Advanced Systems Format) container. It was widely used for downloads, streaming and Windows Movie Maker projects in the 2000s. It plays natively on Windows, but macOS, iOS, Android and web browsers generally need extra software to open it.

You will mostly find WMV in older Windows video archives. Keep it only if a Windows-based system requires it; for watching on phones and Macs, uploading to the web or editing, converting WMV to MP4 avoids compatibility problems.
