Convert GIF to WEBP

Convert GIF images to WEBP in seconds, right in your browser. No upload, no signup and no watermark. You can adjust the quality before converting.

Your file never leaves your device.

How to convert GIF to WEBP

The GIF is decoded on your device and re-encoded as WEBP with the browser's own graphics engine. Because nothing is uploaded, even dozens of photos convert quickly and privately. WebP is typically 25-35% smaller than JPG at the same quality, which makes websites faster and improves Core Web Vitals.

  1. Step 1: Choose your GIF file

Drag and drop a .gif file onto the converter or click to browse. It works on desktop, tablet and phone.

  2. Step 2: Pick the quality (optional)

Keep the recommended setting or adjust it, then the conversion runs instantly.

  3. Step 3: Download the WEBP

Save each result individually, or download everything as a single ZIP when you convert several files.

Good to know

  • Transparency is preserved.
  • Animated images are converted using their first frame.
  • WEBP is a lossy format; the quality setting balances file size and sharpness (85-92% is visually lossless for most photos).
  • Photo metadata (EXIF, GPS location) is removed from the converted image, which is good for privacy.

Why use this GIF to WEBP converter?

  • Batch conversion: drop several images at once and download a ZIP.
  • Nothing is uploaded, so personal photos stay private.
  • Original resolution is kept.
  • No watermark, no account, no app to install.

Is it free?

Yes. Converting GIF to WEBP is free, with no watermark, signup or email required. Local conversions have no artificial file-size or daily cap; the practical limit is your device.

Is my file uploaded?

The GIF file is processed entirely in your browser. It is never uploaded, never stored and never seen by anyone, so this is safe for confidential files.

About the formats

What is GIF?

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and is best known today for short, looping animations. Each frame can use at most 256 colours, and transparency is all-or-nothing: a pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. Its compression is lossless, but the colour limit makes photos look grainy or banded.

Use GIF for simple animations, reactions and small graphics that must play almost anywhere, including email clients. For longer or more colourful animations, an MP4 or WebM video, or an animated WebP, is far smaller and looks better.

What is WEBP?

WebP is an image format developed by Google and released in 2010 to make web images lighter. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, so it can replace JPG, PNG and GIF in many cases. All modern browsers display it, although some older desktop programs still cannot open it.

Use WebP for images on websites and apps, where smaller files mean faster pages. If you need to send an image to someone who will edit it or open it in older software, JPG or PNG are the more compatible choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GIF to WEBP conversion free?

Yes. It is free, with no watermark, signup or email required. Local conversions have no artificial file-size or daily cap; the practical limit is your device.

Will converting GIF to WEBP reduce quality?

WEBP uses lossy compression, but at the default quality the difference is not visible for normal use. Raise the quality setting for print or detailed graphics.

No. The WEBP keeps the exact width and height of the original. Use the Resize Image tool if you need smaller dimensions.

Is it safe to convert gif to webp here?

Yes. The work happens on your own device with WebAssembly and browser APIs, so the file is not uploaded at all. You can even disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Everything runs in a modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari) on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. There is no app, plugin or account.
