How to convert MOV to GIF

An animated GIF plays automatically and silently everywhere, from chat apps to documentation and emails. This converter uses FFmpeg, the engine behind VLC, YouTube and most video software, to turn your MOV into GIF with sensible, high-quality settings chosen automatically. No codecs to pick, no software to install.

  1. Step 1: Choose your MOV file

Drag and drop a .mov, .qt file onto the converter or click to browse. It works on desktop, tablet and phone.

  2. Step 2: Convert on the server

The MOV is uploaded over HTTPS and converted by FFmpeg in an isolated folder.

  3. Step 3: Download the GIF

Save the GIF file to your device. You can start again with another file right away.

  • This server-based video conversion accepts files up to 100 MB. Longer videos take more time, so keep the tab open.

About the formats

What is MOV?

MOV is the QuickTime File Format, a video container created by Apple for its QuickTime multimedia framework. It can hold many codecs, from H.264 and HEVC to professional formats such as Apple ProRes, along with multiple audio tracks, timecode and metadata. MP4 was based on it, so the two are closely related. iPhones save their videos as MOV files by default.

Use MOV when editing video on a Mac, in Final Cut Pro or with other professional tools, especially with ProRes material. To share a clip with Windows or Android users or upload it to the web, converting it to MP4 usually gives better compatibility and smaller files.

What is GIF?

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and is best known today for short, looping animations. Each frame can use at most 256 colours, and transparency is all-or-nothing: a pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. Its compression is lossless, but the colour limit makes photos look grainy or banded.

Use GIF for simple animations, reactions and small graphics that must play almost anywhere, including email clients. For longer or more colourful animations, an MP4 or WebM video, or an animated WebP, is far smaller and looks better.
