How to convert HEIC to JPG (iPhone photos that open everywhere)
What HEIC is, why your iPhone uses it and how to convert HEIC photos to JPG for free, in your browser, without uploading them. Plus the camera setting that avoids HEIC altogether.
You take a photo on your iPhone, send it to your laptop or try to upload it to a website, and something goes wrong: the file ends in .heic, Windows asks for an extension, the form rejects it, or a colleague simply cannot open it. The photo is fine. The format is the problem. This guide explains what HEIC is and the quickest ways to turn it into a JPG that opens anywhere.
What is HEIC?
HEIC is the file extension Apple uses for photos stored in HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format). Instead of the decades-old JPEG compression, it uses a much more modern codec (HEVC, the same family used for video), which keeps the same visual quality in a noticeably smaller file, often around half the size of an equivalent JPG. It also supports features JPG cannot handle, such as 16-bit colour, depth information and several images in one file.
Why your iPhone saves photos as HEIC
Since iOS 11, iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC by default. For Apple it makes sense: smaller photos mean more space on your phone and in iCloud, with no visible loss. The downside is compatibility. Apple devices and recent versions of macOS open HEIC without effort, but many other places still do not:
- Windows may need extra extensions from the Microsoft Store to show HEIC files.
- Websites and online forms (job portals, government sites, shops, older CMSs) often accept only JPG or PNG.
- Older software and printers usually have no idea what a .heic file is.
JPG, on the other hand, opens on practically every device, browser and program ever made. That is why converting is often the easiest fix.
How to convert HEIC to JPG in your browser
- Open the HEIC to JPG converter on Azpy.
- Drop one or several .heic photos onto the page (you can also pick them from your files).
- Download the JPG files, one by one or all together.
The photos are decoded on your own device with a WebAssembly HEIC decoder and re-encoded as JPG by your browser's graphics engine. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so even a batch of photos converts quickly, and it works on a computer or directly on your phone.
JPG, PNG or PDF: which one do you need?
- JPG is the right choice for almost everything: sharing, email, websites and printing. Files are small and universally supported.
- PNG is lossless. Choose HEIC to PNG when you plan to edit the image further and want to avoid adding any JPG compression, keeping in mind that PNG files are much bigger.
- PDF is ideal for documents you photographed: receipts, forms, ID copies or homework. HEIC to PDF places each photo on its own page in a single PDF, in the order you choose, without cropping.
If the JPG is still too heavy for an email or an upload form, run it through Compress Image afterwards. At around 80% quality the difference is hard to see on screen, while the file gets much smaller.
Stop your iPhone from creating HEIC files
If you regularly need JPGs, you can change the format at the source:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Go to Camera and then Formats.
- Select Most Compatible instead of High Efficiency.
From then on, new photos are saved as JPG (and videos as H.264). This only affects photos you take from that moment; existing HEIC photos stay as they are. The trade-off is that the new photos take up more space.
There is also a setting for transfers: in Settings > Photos, under Transfer to Mac or PC, the Automatic option converts photos to a compatible format when you copy them to a computer with a cable. Keep in mind that other ways of moving photos, such as cloud storage, messaging apps or AirDrop, may still deliver the original HEIC file.
Why local conversion matters for privacy
Photos are personal. They show your home, your family, your documents, and they can carry hidden metadata such as the date and the GPS location where they were taken. Uploading them to a random conversion site means trusting a stranger's server with all of that.
With Azpy, HEIC conversion runs entirely in your browser: the photos never leave your device. And if you want to share a picture without metadata, Compress Image also removes EXIF and GPS information from the result.
Quick answers
Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality? JPG uses lossy compression, but at the default quality the difference is not visible for normal use. The JPG will usually be larger than the HEIC, because JPEG compression is less efficient.
Can I convert many photos at once? Yes. Drop them all onto the converter and download the results together.
Is there a size limit? Free conversions accept files of up to 25 MB each, far more than a typical iPhone photo.
Do I need to install anything? No. It works in any modern browser, on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iPhone, with no signup.
