How to convert DOC to ODT

ODT is the ISO-standard OpenDocument format used by LibreOffice and many public administrations, free from vendor lock-in. This converter opens the DOC with LibreOffice and saves it as ODT, preserving text, styles, tables and images as faithfully as possible. It is the quickest way to open an incompatible file or to meet a format requirement without installing an office suite.

  1. Step 1: Choose your DOC file

Drag and drop a .doc file onto the converter or click to browse. It works on desktop, tablet and phone.

  2. Step 2: Convert to ODT

The file is uploaded securely and saved as ODT by LibreOffice in a temporary, isolated folder.

  3. Step 3: Download the ODT

Save the ODT file to your device. You can start again with another file right away.

About the formats

What is DOC?

DOC is the binary document format used by Microsoft Word up to Word 2003. It stores text, formatting, images and tables in a proprietary structure that Microsoft later documented publicly. Since Word 2007 it has been replaced by DOCX, which is based on XML and ZIP, but Word, LibreOffice and most word processors still open DOC files.

Use DOC only when you must share a document with someone on a very old version of Word or with a system that accepts nothing else. For everything else, DOCX is smaller, more robust and better supported. If you receive a DOC file, saving it as DOCX or PDF usually makes it easier to work with.

What is ODT?

ODT (OpenDocument Text) is an open standard for word processor documents and the native format of LibreOffice Writer and OpenOffice Writer. Because the specification is open, the format is supported by many applications beyond the two suites that created it. It is a popular, vendor-neutral alternative to proprietary word processor formats.

Use ODT when you work in LibreOffice, OpenOffice or another program that favours open standards, or when you want documents that are not locked to one vendor. ODT is also a safe interchange format between different office suites.
