About the formats

What is FLAC?

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) is an open, royalty-free audio format maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation. It compresses audio losslessly: the decoded sound is bit-for-bit identical to the original, yet files are noticeably smaller than WAV. It supports high resolutions, multichannel audio and metadata tags such as artist and cover art.

Use FLAC to archive CDs, store a music library in full quality or download high-resolution releases. It is ideal when you want smaller files than WAV without any loss. For phones with limited storage or players without FLAC support, a copy in AAC or MP3 is more practical.

What is M4A?

M4A is an MPEG-4 file that contains only audio; the extension simply tells players there is no video inside. The sound is usually compressed with AAC (lossy) or ALAC, Apple Lossless. It was popularised by iTunes and is the format of iTunes Store purchases, Apple voice memos and many audiobooks and podcasts.

Use M4A for music and recordings in the Apple ecosystem, where it offers better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate. If you need to play the file on older players or systems with limited support, MP3 remains the most compatible option.
