How to convert MP4 to M4A

M4A (AAC) is the native audio format of Apple devices and iTunes, with better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate. The MP4 is converted with FFmpeg, the industry-standard media engine, on our server and deleted immediately afterwards. It is the easiest way to keep the music, a talk or a voice track from a video.

  1. Step 1: Choose your MP4 file

Drag and drop a .mp4, .m4v file onto the converter or click to browse. It works on desktop, tablet and phone.

  2. Step 2: Convert to M4A

The file is converted by FFmpeg on a secure server.

  3. Step 3: Download the M4A

Save the M4A file to your device. You can start again with another file right away.

About the formats

What is MP4?

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a container format standardised by ISO and derived from Apple's QuickTime format. It is not a codec itself: it usually holds H.264 or H.265 (HEVC) video and AAC audio, and can also carry subtitles, chapters and metadata. The .m4v extension is a variant used mainly by Apple. MP4 plays on practically every phone, computer, smart TV and browser.

Use MP4 whenever you want a video to play everywhere: sharing with others, uploading to social networks or embedding on a website. With H.264 inside it offers the best compatibility; H.265 gives smaller files but is not supported by every device.

What is M4A?

M4A is an MPEG-4 file that contains only audio; the extension simply tells players there is no video inside. The sound is usually compressed with AAC (lossy) or ALAC, Apple Lossless. It was popularised by iTunes and is the format of iTunes Store purchases, Apple voice memos and many audiobooks and podcasts.

Use M4A for music and recordings in the Apple ecosystem, where it offers better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate. If you need to play the file on older players or systems with limited support, MP3 remains the most compatible option.
