How to convert FLV to MP4

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the most compatible video format there is: it plays on iPhone, Android, Windows, macOS, smart TVs, WhatsApp, Instagram and every browser. This converter uses FFmpeg, the engine behind VLC, YouTube and most video software, to turn your FLV into MP4 with sensible, high-quality settings chosen automatically. No codecs to pick, no software to install.

  1. Step 1: Choose your FLV file

Drag and drop a .flv file onto the converter or click to browse. It works on desktop, tablet and phone.

  2. Step 2: Convert on the server

The FLV is uploaded over HTTPS and converted by FFmpeg in an isolated folder.

  3. Step 3: Download the MP4

Save the MP4 file to your device. You can start again with another file right away.

Good to know

  • When the video is already H.264/AAC, it is repackaged without re-encoding, which is instant and lossless. Otherwise it is re-encoded with a high-quality setting.
  • This server-based video conversion accepts files up to 100 MB. Longer videos take more time, so keep the tab open.

About the formats

What is FLV?

FLV (Flash Video) is a container format created for Adobe Flash Player, originally by Macromedia. In the 2000s it powered most online video, including the early YouTube, typically with Sorenson Spark, VP6 or H.264 video. Adobe ended support for Flash Player at the end of 2020, so browsers no longer play FLV, although players such as VLC still open it.

There is little reason to create new FLV files today. If you have old FLV videos from downloads or archives, converting them to MP4 lets you watch, edit and share them on any modern device.

What is MP4?

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a container format standardised by ISO and derived from Apple's QuickTime format. It is not a codec itself: it usually holds H.264 or H.265 (HEVC) video and AAC audio, and can also carry subtitles, chapters and metadata. The .m4v extension is a variant used mainly by Apple. MP4 plays on practically every phone, computer, smart TV and browser.

Use MP4 whenever you want a video to play everywhere: sharing with others, uploading to social networks or embedding on a website. With H.264 inside it offers the best compatibility; H.265 gives smaller files but is not supported by every device.
