How to convert MP4 to WAV

WAV is uncompressed PCM audio, the standard for audio editing, DAWs, broadcast and sound design. This tool decodes the MP4 with your browser's audio engine and encodes WAV locally, so the file never leaves your device. It is the easiest way to keep the music, a talk or a voice track from a video.

  1. Step 1: Choose your MP4 file

Drag and drop a .mp4, .m4v file onto the converter or click to browse. It works on desktop, tablet and phone.

  2. Step 2: Choose the quality

The audio is decoded and re-encoded on your device.

  3. Step 3: Download the WAV

Save each result individually, or download everything as a single ZIP when you convert several files.

Good to know

  • Only the soundtrack is extracted; the video stream is discarded, so the result is much smaller than the original.
  • WAV files are large (about 10 MB per minute in CD quality) because they are not compressed.
  • A lossless target cannot restore quality that the MP4 compression already removed; it only prevents further loss.
  • Decoding uses your browser's built-in codecs. Chrome and Edge support the widest range of formats.

Why use this MP4 to WAV converter?

  • WAV is uncompressed PCM audio, the standard for audio editing, DAWs, broadcast and sound design.
  • Keeps the original sample rate and stereo channels.
  • No watermark, no length limit within the file size cap.

Is it free?

Yes. Converting MP4 to WAV is free, with no watermark, signup or email required. Local conversions have no artificial file-size or daily cap; the practical limit is your device.

Is my file uploaded?

The MP4 file is processed entirely in your browser. It is never uploaded, never stored and never seen by anyone, so this is safe for confidential files.

About the formats

What is MP4?

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a container format standardised by ISO and derived from Apple's QuickTime format. It is not a codec itself: it usually holds H.264 or H.265 (HEVC) video and AAC audio, and can also carry subtitles, chapters and metadata. The .m4v extension is a variant used mainly by Apple. MP4 plays on practically every phone, computer, smart TV and browser.

Use MP4 whenever you want a video to play everywhere: sharing with others, uploading to social networks or embedding on a website. With H.264 inside it offers the best compatibility; H.265 gives smaller files but is not supported by every device.

What is WAV?

WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) was introduced by Microsoft and IBM in 1991 and is based on the RIFF container. It normally holds uncompressed PCM audio, so it keeps every detail of the recording, but a few minutes of CD-quality stereo already take tens of megabytes. Almost every audio editor, operating system and device can open it.

Use WAV for recording, editing, mastering and exchanging audio between studio tools, where quality must stay untouched. When you need to share or store large amounts of audio, FLAC gives the same quality in smaller files, and MP3 or AAC are best for casual listening.
