Opus (Opus audio codec)

Opus is an open, royalty-free lossy audio codec standardised by the IETF in 2012. It handles everything from narrow-band speech to high-quality stereo music, adapts its bitrate on the fly and has very low latency, which is why it is the mandatory audio codec in WebRTC. An .opus file usually stores Opus audio inside an Ogg container.

Use Opus for voice recordings, calls, podcasts and streaming where you want excellent quality at low bitrates. It is supported by modern browsers and many apps, but some car stereos and older players cannot play it, so MP3 or AAC are safer for maximum compatibility.
