  • Files are deleted automatically after conversion.

Is it free?

Yes. Converting MP3 to AAC is free, with no watermark, signup or email required. Local conversions have no artificial file-size or daily cap; the practical limit is your device. This server-based conversion accepts files up to 50 MB.

About the formats

What is MP3?

MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) is a lossy audio format developed largely at the Fraunhofer Institute and standardised by MPEG in the early 1990s. It removes sounds that human hearing is unlikely to notice, shrinking files dramatically. Quality depends on the bitrate: higher bitrates sound closer to the original. Its patents have expired and virtually every player, car stereo and browser supports it.

Use MP3 when compatibility is the priority: podcasts, music for older devices, audio for websites or files you send to anyone. For archiving or editing, keep a lossless original such as WAV or FLAC, because each lossy re-encode adds artefacts.

What is AAC?

AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a lossy audio codec standardised by MPEG as part of MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, and designed to succeed MP3. At the same bitrate it generally sounds better than MP3. It is the standard audio codec in MP4 videos and is widely used by Apple, YouTube and digital broadcasting. A .aac file is a raw AAC stream, while .m4a wraps the same audio in an MPEG-4 container.

Use AAC for music, podcasts and audio tracks where you want good quality in small files, especially for Apple devices, smartphones and streaming. If a file must play on very old hardware, MP3 is more universal; for archiving, keep a lossless copy.
