  1. Step 1: Choose your WMA file

Drag and drop a .wma file onto the converter or click to browse. It works on desktop, tablet and phone.

  2. Step 2: Convert to MP3

The file is converted by FFmpeg on a secure server.

  3. Step 3: Download the MP3

Save the MP3 file to your device. You can start again with another file right away.

About the formats

What is WMA?

WMA (Windows Media Audio) is a family of audio codecs developed by Microsoft and introduced in 1999 as a competitor to MP3. Besides the standard lossy version, there are WMA Pro, WMA Lossless and WMA Voice variants. WMA files normally use Microsoft's ASF container and play natively in Windows Media Player, but support on Apple devices, Android and web browsers is limited.

You will mostly find WMA in older music libraries ripped with Windows Media Player. For everyday listening on phones, cars and other devices, converting WMA to MP3 or AAC avoids playback problems. Avoid creating new WMA files unless a specific Windows system requires them.

What is MP3?

MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) is a lossy audio format developed largely at the Fraunhofer Institute and standardised by MPEG in the early 1990s. It removes sounds that human hearing is unlikely to notice, shrinking files dramatically. Quality depends on the bitrate: higher bitrates sound closer to the original. Its patents have expired and virtually every player, car stereo and browser supports it.

Use MP3 when compatibility is the priority: podcasts, music for older devices, audio for websites or files you send to anyone. For archiving or editing, keep a lossless original such as WAV or FLAC, because each lossy re-encode adds artefacts.

At the default bitrate the difference is inaudible for most people. Choose a higher bitrate if you plan to edit or archive the audio.
